"What is Crip Linguistics?"
Jenny Singleton
(Stony Brook University)

In this lecture, I’ll summarize a recent paper (or manifesto) by Jon Henner & Octavian Robinson on the notion of Crip Linguistics. This framework is influenced by the Disability Rights movement and critiques how linguists characterize “language disorders”. They center disabled voices and advocate for a linguistic care work approach in conversations about disabled languaging. We’ll discuss ableism in linguistics and how linguists may want to reconsider the terminology they use in their own scholarship
