Seminar: Foundations of Syntax
Stanislao Zompi (University of Potsdam)
Friday January 9, then Monday-Thursday January 12-15
Block 2: 10:00-11:15 am (NY) / 5:00-6:15 pm (Kyiv) / 6:00-7:15 pm (St. P.)
In this course, we will introduce some of the main empirical findings about natural-language syntax and how they’re modeled in contemporary theory. Focusing on the research tradition of transformational generative grammar, we will cover notions such as constituency, selection, movement, and (syntactic) binding. In so doing, we will also try to get a sense of why and how the study of syntax can be exciting. No prior syntax background is required.
