Seminar: Foundations of Mathematical and Computational Linguistics
Jeffrey Heinz (Stony Brook University)
Friday January 9, then Monday-Thursday January 12-15
Block 2: 10:00-11:15 am (NY) / 5:00-6:15 pm (Kyiv) / 6:00-7:15 pm (St. P.)
Language is a system, and language learning is a process. Wherever you find systems and processes, you will find mathematics and computation. This course introduces foundational concepts in mathematics and computation relevant to human languages and language learning. Each day will focus on some aspect of grammar (such as syntax, morphology, phonology, semantics), and show how mathematical and computational analysis helps answer questions regarding cross-linguistic variation, language processing, and language learning.
