Seminar: Challenging Ableism: Disability Activism in Art and Culture
Friday January 9, then Monday-Thursday January 12-15
Block 1: 8:30-9:45 am (NY) / 3:30-4:45 pm (Kyiv) / 4:30-5:45 pm (St. P.)
This seminar focuses on disability in conjunction with social, material, and psychic categories like gender, desire, and race. We will read texts on ableism, intra-action, and compulsory ablebodiedness, watch art and activist projects on mental health and capitalism, think about rest as resistance, and discuss about the role of community in a war-affected capitalist ecocidal world. Participants will be given texts, podcasts, and short videos to prepare before each session and during the seminar we will use break out rooms, collective dynamic documents, and writing exercises to process and think. The final assignment is a short essay on key take-aways connecting the topics discussed in the seminar to the participant’s own sociocultural context and environment with examples from art, culture, and/or activism.
