Block 4

(4:00-5:20 pm, Kyiv/St. P)
This course examines the relationship between syntax, semantics, and processing within a parallel constraint-based approach to grammar. The course consists of three parts. Part I introduces a parallel architectural model of syntax, focusing on the interaction between constituent structure and functional structure, and the principles that regulate their correspondence. Part II turns to the syntax–semantics interface, incorporating glue semantics as a formal system for modelling compositional meaning and exploring how constraint-based approaches account for complex phenomena such as unbounded dependencies. Part III considers how an incremental processing theory fits into the broader picture of this grammatical architecture, where linguistic structures can be built and interpreted incrementally, drawing on both theoretical and psycholinguistic literature.
